Project Description: APNEP supported the North Carolina Division of Forest Resources with the construction of a weather-protected outdoor classroom and nearby observation deck at the Clemmons Educational State Forest on the Neuse River in Johnston County. The observation deck flooring features a painted outline of North Carolina that details the State’s 17 river basins and major rivers. A water quality teaching module and activity book were also developed that addresses NC’s 17 river basins, utilizing the River Basin Deck as a “teaching platform”. Kiosks and exhibits will be placed in the pavilion to be used for educational programs and the general public.
The North Carolina Division of Forest Resources operates a system of seven Educational State Forests (ESFs) designed to teach the public, especially school children, about the forest environment. The Forestry Non Point Source (NPS) Unit is charged to develop and implement projects designed to reduce non-point source pollution from forestry operations. These two entities within the Division of Forest Resources have joined to develop this educational resource that will be used to educate ESF visitors and student groups about their role in protecting water quality by minimizing non-point source pollution in their daily activities.
