Environmental Defense Wetlands Assessment

Project Description:  APNEP is supporting Environmental Defense, a national non-profit organization with an office in Raleigh, in the design of a GIS-based methodology for assessing wetland and watershed functions (water quality, water balance/quantity, and habitat) that can be utilized to prioritize wetland protection and restoration efforts to revitalize the river herring fishery.  This methodology is being tested in the Chowan watershed and will be expanded into the western Albemarle Sound in 2008.  Information gathered from the analysis will be used for prioritization of wetlands restoration sites (200 acres of which will be acquired with matching funds during this grant), it will provide a long-term management plan for preserving and restoring wetlands in the region, and will inform conservation planning efforts such as APNEP’s Comprehensive Conservation and Management Plan
