May 4 — Vermicomposting Workshop, 10 a.m. - 12 p.m., NCSU's Compost Training Facility, Lake Wheeler Road, Raleigh. Sponsored by NC State University. Learn to use earthworms to transform your kitchen scraps into a rich soil amendment for the garden. Cost: $8.00 (for bins and educational materials). May 8-10 — 7th Coastal & Estuarine Shallow Water Science & Management Conference, Holiday Inn-Boardwalk, Atlantic City, NJ. Based on the abstracts submitted, the conference theme will be the interrelationship between shallow water habitats, water quality and adjacent land use. Although presentations in these areas will be predominate, there are a host of other topics. May 9-10 — Managing Visitor Use in Coastal and Marine Protected Areas, Duke University Marine Lab Auditorium, Beaufort. Cosponsored by NOAA's Coastal Services Center and the North Carolina Estuarine Research Reserve's Coastal Training Program. This workshop provides an overview of the human dimensions of protected area management, offers examples of visitor use and associated impacts to natural resources and visitor experiences, and demonstrates applications to help managers address the people side of resource management. May 15-22 — Bottlenose Dolphin Workshops Scheduled. Sponsored by the National Marine Fisheries Service (NFMS). A series of 11 informational workshops will be held along the East Coast for commercial fishermen affected by the final rule implementing the Bottlenose Dolphin Take Reduction Plan (BDTRP). These workshops will be an informal setting in which NMFS staff will provide an overview of the take reduction plan process and contents of the final rule, gear research dates, and an opportunity to ask questions. Listed below are dates and workshop locations for VA, NC and SC with each workshop scheduled from 7-9 p.m. on their respective night: May 15, Virginia Beach, VA; May 16, Chincoteague, VA; May 17, Manteo, NC; May 18, Morehead City, NC; May 19, Wilmington, NC; May 22, Beaufort, SC. The goal of the workshop is to provide a better understanding of bycatch issues, identify potential solutions that can reduce bycatch, and enhance ability to measure bycatch. There is no registration fee. June 1-2 — Vermicomposting Workshop, NCSU, Raleigh. Sponsored by NC State University. The theme of this two-day workshop is "Vermicomposting Around the World". Learn about vermicomposting techniques and equipment used around the world in countries including Australia, Canada, Azerbajahn, the Phillippines, and the United States. On June 1, tour the NCSU's Compost Training Facility, which features a 40-foot by 30-foot vermicomposting structure. June 5 — North Carolina's Changing Waterfronts Forum: Coastal Access and Traditional Uses, Riverfront Convention Center, New Bern. Sponsored by North Carolina Sea Grant. Each year, more waterfront areas are transformed for residential uses. In turn, many people whose livelihoods depend on fishing, seafood processing, seafood sales, and other coastal enterprises are concerned about decreasing infrastructure and water access. This daylong informational session will include sessions on how and why waterfronts are changing, including cultural and economic factors; options for communities and property owners; and innovative ways that other states are dealing with similar issues. June 18-23 — The 2006 Coastal Legacy Workshop, Penn Center, St. Helena Island, SC. Sponsored by the Center for Ocean Sciences Education Excellence SouthEast (COSEE-SE). Twenty-four elementary and middle school teachers from NC, SC and GA will be selected to participate in this experiential workshop to use coastal heritage and culturalized science.
